Horse Training Equipment
If you own a horse and you want to train it, you will need horse training equipment. However, you cannot just buy any training equipment, you need to make sure you buy the specific kind which meets your needs. Before you buy equipment you have to consider the following:
- Your training goals
- Pros and Cons of you and your horse
- How your goals can be reached
What follows is a summary of some of the most common horse training equipment.
Long Line and Rope Halter
Long line and rope halter are probably the most important pieces of training equipment for horses. They help you control your horse when you are on the ground. These two tools are used to get the desired response from your horse with only the slightest cue. The halter you choose should put pressure on the right area and release the pressure immediately after your horse responds.
The rope halters should be prepared from marine type braided rope, which lasts longer, weighs less and does not hurt your horse. The rope should always be tied or knotted rather than use metal fixtures or buckles since those can harm your horse.
Long lines are usually between 12 and 60 feet; much longer than the traditional lead line length of 6 feet. The long rope helps you control your horse when you are in a large open area.
Lunge Cavesson and Line Whip
Every horse training program must include lunging. This technique teaches your horse to respond to voice commands and body language while also improving her rhythm, balance, and gait. To get the best results, make sure that you invest in the best lunging equipment you can find. A lunge cavesson is a sturdy head collar that is made specifically for training horses.
Ideally, you will have a lunge line of 30 feet, which will give you a circle with 60 foot diameter. Lunge lines are often made from flat woven fabrics. Make sure that your lunge whip is 6 feet long with the same lash length so that you can maintain a safe distance from your horse while staying in control.
Side Reins
Side reins are used for both lunging and riding, which means that they are an important piece of equipment to have. You can use a lunging cavesson or a bridle with the side reins, which should be adjusted so they are the same length on both sides. You will also need to adjust the side reins to meet your horse’s fitness and condition needs as well as her experience level. If you do not keep the side reins long enough you will force your horse to flex beyond its natural limit which could cause physical injury.
Proper Training Area
Last but not least, the training area that you choose needs to be large with proper footing for horses. Traffic cones are the simplest and cheapest equipment available, but they are very useful. They help with guiding your horse and they can be used to create a round area for lunging or riding, a dressage space or lateral guide region. You may also want to get trotting poles or mini jumps for your horse’s ground schooling.
